Frequently Asked Questions

Appointment Questions

How can I prepare for my appointment?

We recommend having a light snack 30 mins prior to your appointment. This helps especially if you have a fear of needles or are prone to fainting.

Please be sure to read our ID requirements through our booking page. If you have any questions about this, feel free to contact us here.

Body piercings are highly anatomy based, so we do advise having a "backup plan" (second piercing choice) in mind in the case that the piercing you were hoping to have done may not be a safe option for your anatomy.

Who can I bring to my appointment?

As we are a high volume studio, we ask that you bring no more than 2-3 guests with you. To maintain a calm and organized environment, and to ensure our piercers are able to focus. We allow only 1-2 support people to be present in the room with you during your procedure.

In adhering to health board regulations as a personal service establishment, where invasive procedures are taking place, no animals are permitted within the studio unless they are a registered service animal (please have paperwork with you).

I'm under 19, what are your ID/consent requirements?

Please read through our ID requirements page prior to booking.

For anyone under the age of 19, we will require a parent or legal guardian to sign a consent form in order for you to be pierced, without required ID, we are unable to preform any piercing services. Due to the invasive nature of the procedures being preformed, legal reasons and under the guidelines of our insurance policies, there can be no exceptions. Please read through our ID requirements page.

Our Cancelation Policy

We ask that you please reschedule or cancel at least 1 day before the beginning of your appointment or you may be charged a cancellation fee.

Appointments cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment time will be subject to a cancellation fee of $40 per piercing service, $80 for an Ear Jewelry Curation appointment, $20 for a Microdermal removal Appointment, or $20 for a Changing Multiple Piercings appointment. A No Show fee of $40 will be charged if the client does not arrive for their scheduled appointment. No Show Fees and Cancellation Fees are nonrefundable.

How do I prepare for my Ear Curation appointment?

Please be sure to bring inspiration images with you as this will help our staff to make your vision a reality. It is also helpful to have a budget in mind upon arrival. You will have a staff member dedicated to you for the duration of your appointment time, allowing us to work closely together.

I just want to shop for jewelry, do I need an appointment?

No appointment is required when shopping for jewelry. Feel free to pop by to take a look anytime during our open hours. If you think you will need assistance in changing your jewelry, it would be best to book a jewelry change appointment.

Is there free parking?

Yes! We have 2 assigned 'Luar' parking spots available to customers.

You MUST let our employees know your license plate number if you are parking in our designated spots. If your plate number is not registered with us, you will be towed at your own expense as per the new parking policies.

To enter our building's parking lot, you will need to enter on Leon st. (we are on the corner of Leon and Ethel within the store fronts of the apartment building). Our address is 1665 Ethel St, Kelowna, BC.

If these are taken, there is also 2 hour free street parking located on Leon rd.

Are you wheelchair & disability friendly?

Yes we are! Although there is unfortunately no designated disability parking, we do our best to accommodate. Please let us know in the notes section when booking online if you have any special requests or concerns prior to your next visit with us.

Can I bring my small children with me?

We ask that you do not bring small children with you to your appointment as this can be very stressful and distracting, making it difficult for our staff to focus, and ensure a flawless procedure. We need to maintain a quiet and calm environment for our staff and clients in order to provide everyone a positive experience and outcome.

Jewelry Questions

What if I have metal sensitivities/allergies?

At Luar, all initial insertion jewelry is either internally threaded, mirror polish, Ti-6AL-4V-ELI ASTM F136 - implant grade Titanium or solid nickel-free 14kt gold.

It is quite common to have metal sensitivities, this is usually due to the nickel found in other lesser quality metals such as stainless steel, sterling silver, or plated jewelry, none of these types of metals are safe for any initial piercing.

Can my initial piercing be performed with a hoop?

At Luar we do start all initial piercings with studs, as they heal much faster, with significantly less issues, and less pain. Hoops are notorious for causing a lot of severe issues during the healing period which sometimes leads to the total loss of the piercing, excess scarring, permanent disfiguration of tissue. As professionals it’s our job to do what’s best/safest for you and your body and there are no exceptions to this standard of practice.

Can I use my own jewelry for my piercing appointment?

No. We only pierce with jewelry from Luar. As it ensures we maintain product material and quality control. All jewelry also goes through a specific sterilization process prior to use - but our prices do include your basic initial jewelry.

When can I change my jewelry?

This is highly dependant on the piercing & your body!

Please get in contact with us if you have any other unanswered questions about your piercing, or if you are unsure when it will be ready for a jewelry change.

Take a look at our Aftercare page to learn more about your piercing!

Can I swim with my new piercing?

No, we do not recommend submerging any new piercing in any body of water (pools, hottub, lake, ocean, & bathtubs) for the first 2-3 months. Bacteria is commonly found in these places and we do not want that entering your body as your piercing is an open wound.

Piercing Questions

How many piercings can I get?

Body piercings can be particularly difficult to heal when we perform more than one at a time. We recommend healing no more than 3 piercings at a time.

Do I need to be a certain age to get a specific piercing?

Great question & YES! Our minimum age that we pierce at Luar is 10 years old and up, regardless of parental consent. If anyone is under the age of 19, we require a parent or legal guardian to give consent. Please take notice to our age requirements as they are different for each specific piercing and or your desired piercer. They can be found on our Price List, or when booking online.

What is a downsize & when will I need one?

Downsizes are commonly done within the first 2-4 weeks from the initial piercing. Learn more on our Piercing Aftercare page!

The initial piercing must be done with a longer labret post to account for swelling, as it is very unpredictable. If you do not downsize your piercing, irritation can occur quite easily. This can result in a very long and uncomfortable healing process.

If you are unsure whether you are ready for a downsize, it would be best to have a piercer take a look in person during a jewelry change appointment. You can book a downsize appointment here.

My piercing is angry at me, is it infected?

It is usually not an infection, it's most likely irritation! Typically 'piercing bumps' are purely caused by some source of irritation. You may have slept on it by accident, bumped it, tugged at it, swam with it while it was still fresh, or forgot to clean it for a while (and the crusties are starting to build-up). Make sure you are following the correct After Care instructions!

Do not use "google's homemade remedies" to remove these. Simply eliminate the source of the irritation and your bump will go away. Be sure you are always following the proper aftercare instructions! This could be occurring from your jewelry quality, jewelry sizing, improper aftercare, moisture build up, trauma, and in some cases, just a poorly done piercing. If you are worried please reach out to us and we can let you know if what your experiencing should be seen by a physician.

If I am pregnant/breastfeeding, can I still get pierced?

If you are pregnant you unfortunately cannot be pierced as it can impose a risk on you and the health of your baby.

If you are breastfeeding and wanting a piercing (including nipple piercings) we recommend waiting a minimum of 4 months since you finished breastfeeding, before being pierced.

Unsure, or have any other questions? Feel free to get in contact with us!

How long until I can safely go swimming?

It is always best to avoid submerging the piercing in bodies of water such as lakes, pools, oceans, hot tubs, etc for a minimum of 2 months after the initial piercing.

Can I use numbing cream?

We do not provide numbing cream (such as lidocaine).

If you decide to use this prior to your appointment with us, we are only safely able to pierce with the use of 1-2.5% lidocaine products. If the lidocaine cream is any higher than 2.5%, we will not be able to perform the piercing service as it can be considered unsafe.

Our staff will ask what percentage the lidocaine cream is, please take a photo or take note on the percentage of the cream prior to your appointment.
